For nearly 100 years, Children's Book Week has been celebrated during the week before
Thanksgiving. In 1919, Frederic G. Melcher, secretary of the American
Booksellers Association, asked librarians to be guests and speakers at the
annual ABA meeting. At the meeting, Franklin K. Mathiews, librarian for the Boy
Scouts of America, presented his plan for a Children's Book Week. By the end of
the convention, a resolution was passed and the ABA agreed to become the
official sponsor of Children's Book Week. Since then, Children's Book Week has
been introducing young people to new authors and ideas in schools, libraries,
homes and bookstores.
