| Realizing that family reunions could be used for more than eating a lot of good food, Shaun McLaughlin founded National Black Family Month in 2006 to encourage families and communities to bond and celebrate the African-American culture and heritage. McLaughlin began this observance by convincing local organizations to attend family reunions to give free blood pressure readings and to host book drives to remind parents to spend more time reading to their children.

Since 2006, every July has neen National Black Family Month! Fairs, picnics, family reunions, and barbecues are all popular ways of bringing families together and celebrating this month.
