Reye's Syndrome is a disease that causes various detrimental effects throughout the body, but it most notably damages the brain and liver. While the cause and cure remain unknown, the condition is associated with consumption of aspirin and other over the counter products by children with viral diseases such as the chicken pox. Early diagnosis is crucial, otherwise those affected will experience severe brain damage and even death. National Reye's Syndrome Awareness Week is the third week in September and serves as a reminder of how important it is to avoid giving children aspirin and other salicylate containing medications when they are sick with a virus.
