The first celebration of women's history in America began in 1978 as "Women's
History Week" in Sonoma County, California. The celebration included the
selection of International Women's Day, March 8, and was recognized by
relatively few organizations. In 1981, Senator Orrin Hatch and Representative
Barbara Mikulski co-sponsored a joint Congressional resolution recognizing
National Women's History Week as an official holiday. By 1987, Congress had
expanded the celebration, and March was officially declared Women's History
Month.
