The importance of a healthy heart does not come as a surprise to anyone; however heart disease is the leading cause of death among men and women in the United States. World Heart Day began in 1999 in an effort to create awareness and educate the public about preventative measures to reduce cardiovascular disease and stroke. Held on the last Sunday in September each year, members of the World Heart Federation, as well as non-members, come out to celebrate with a variety of activities designed to promote heart health, such as walkathons, heart health quizzes, risk factor screening, healthy heart walks, and more.
