Thanksgiving

ThanksgivingThe first thing you probably think of when someone says the word “Thanksgiving” is turkey. You may also think of mashed potatoes, corn, pumpkin pie, stuffing, and most importantly, enjoying time spent with the ones you care about. This holiday, occurring on November 24th, is a time to reflect on all that you have, and to be thankful for it, great or small. Most Americans believe that the first Thanksgiving was an autumn feast that took place sometime in 1621 at Plymouth Plantation, Massachusetts.

The holiday originated when a group of separatists from the Church of England landed at Plymouth Rock instead of their intended destination of Virginia. These pilgrims were ill-prepared for the harsh winters of Massachusetts in 1620, and never would have been able to endure the difficult times if it were not for the native Wampanoag people. In the autumn of 1621, they celebrated a three-day harvest feast with the Wampanoag to show their appreciation and thanksgiving for their friends’ aid as well as their own survival.

Thanksgiving is a unique tradition in which people of all races, religions and backgrounds can partake.
