When it comes to sports, promotional products are as much a part of the fan experience as doing the wave or belting out “We Will Rock You.”
You’ve no doubt seen promotional giveaways at baseball and football games, but what about roller derby? You just might—the rough and tumble world of women’s flat track roller derby is on the rise big time. The sport is becoming so popular that it’s one of eight sports under consideration for the 2020 Olympics. The Women’s Flat Track Derby Association reports that there are more than 400 leagues and 1,200 teams worldwide.
As a fledgling team (the Dolls got their start only a year ago), it needed help creating an identity, promoting itself, and building and engaging a fan base. The S.C.A.R. Dolls turned to ePromos for some promotional ideas.
“At our events, we paint scars on the fans, and we wanted a fun giveaway that kind of tied in to that,” says Harmony Knowles, a player who also serves on the team’s advertising committee.
Stephanie Vozzo, one of our expert promotions specialists, immediately came up with some creative solutions. “Stephanie threw out all kinds of ideas that had to do with scars—she was really great,” Knowles says.
The winning idea? Promotional stress balls shaped like bandages. Considering that the team’s logo is a doll with a bandage across her knee, this promotional product was the perfect fit.
The bandage-shaped stress balls capture the spirit of the sport (you’re gonna get some bumps and bruises), and they’re a unique way for fans to show support.
Fans can purchase the logo stress relievers at a merchandise booth set up during the games. Knowles says the team had a turnout of about 600 people at their first event earlier this month, and she’s excited about doing more promos in the future.
“We’re also looking at doing some promotional tattoos,” she says, “but as for the band-aids, we just love them.”
