Using promotional items can be a powerful marketing strategy for your business if done properly. Calculating return on investment (ROI) can be difficult for media advertising campaigns. The ROI on promo items can be seen with real numbers, giving a business a better sense of what works and what doesn’t. Companies are looking into non-traditional marketing ideas. Consumers see and hear so many ads every day that they become numb to the messages. Using promo items to market a company is very different than using television, radio or Internet ads. Potential customers are more likely to remember a new or different marketing campaign.

The ROI on promotional gifts can easily be tracked. If the recipient leaves their contact information in exchange for the item, the company can compare who got gifts and who came back. For lower cost items, a small gift should be sent. Pens, pads of paper and similar items are great for lower priced items. For expensive items such as cars, a more expensive gift should be sent. Promotional gifts are a direct reflection upon the company that gifts them. Cheap gifts that break easily or have no useful function will not be received well. They also make a company look bad, even though the advertising company did not manufacture the item itself.

Show potential customers that you value their time by selecting an item they will use. When customers use an item, it keeps the company name fresh in their mind and provides more brand exposure. This will yield a higher ROI for the marketing effort. Giving a promo gift is usually a lot cheaper than buying a television or radio ad. Calculating the ROI on a commercial ad campaign is difficult. By giving small gifts directly to the customer, a company and target their potential customers and then track future purchases giving hard data to calculate ROI.
