If you have ever wondered why you always seem to have all this extra stuff, like pens or calendars, around with names and phone numbers of businesses on them, the answer is simple: Giving away promotional items works.
Giving away promo items is the low cost, low risk, highly efficient way to soft sell your way into the heart of your customer. And the best part is, by the time the customer receives the promo item, forgets where he or she got it, uses it over and over again, and then finally has a problem that you can solve, your business comes to them in a top of mind recall fashion that makes it seems like it was their idea to call you. Congratulations – you have just achieved the pinnacle of salesmanship by giving a customer a pen. Who would have thought it was so easy?
Perhaps the most effective way to give away promo items is at an event which is marketed to those in greatest need of your product. Trade shows that are put on by your industry, or opt in events of your own are a great way to meet, greet, and speak to your customer base. You meet and greet at the event, and your promotional item speaks to them from the moment you give it to them. Some of the events that promotional items are best given away at include:
1. Trade shows put on by your industry
2. Holiday celebrations put on by your business
3. As gifts of appreciation for a high selling product to walk in customers
4. Sales events
Picking the perfect promotional item means giving away an item that corresponds to the event, gives your customer some immediate and lasting value, and has the vital company information printed prominently on the item. Many companies have trouble extracting real value from their promotional giveaways simply because they pick the wrong items to give away. For example, if you were throwing a Christmas appreciation party for your customers, a Christmas tree ornament would not be the best giveaway. Why? Because after Christmas, the ornament would be put away in a box – not very lasting value. Also, who wants a Christmas tree ornament with an address and a slogan on it?
A better idea for a giveaway would be a cookie tray or a muffin pan. Cookies and cupcakes are always baked around the holidays, and the tray can be used after the holidays as well. You have given your customer something of immediate and lasting value, and every time they bake cookies, they will be exposed to your information. Even better would be if your business was in the culinary industry. Give your promo items away in a non threatening fashion, that is, there should not be a hard sell accompanying the giveaway. Make sure that the customer feels appreciated and tell him or her exactly why you are giving them this promotional item. If all this is done correctly, the item will do all of the selling that you need for you.
