Light The Night raises money for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) to help find cures and treatments for blood cancers. LLS is the world’s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education, and patient services. LLS’s mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. LLS has supported advancements in blood cancer research with targeted therapies that zero in on cancer cells to kill them, and immunotherapy drugs that use the patient’s own immune system to attack the cancer. These breakthroughs have saved thousands of people’s lives.
Why Light The Night?
Light the Night hosts a nationwide evening walk, fittingly named “Light The Night Walk”. When your or a loved one is diagnosed with a blood cancer, it’s a very dark feeling, Light the Night helps to bring you out of the darkness with their two-mile, lighted balloon walk. It’s a fun way for people to come together to celebrate and commemorate the lives blood cancers have touched. The evening is filled with music and entertainment for all ages.
Walks are held in over 200 cities in the United States as well as in Australia. During each walk, a blood cancer survivor is honored by leading the group. He or she will share their story of survival to inspire those still fighting. Participants carry illuminated balloons similar to Chinese lanterns. Each color represents how blood cancer has touched that participants life: white for patients and survivors of blood cancer, red for supporters, and gold to remember those who have lost their battle. Blue is used instead of red in Australia.
Celebrities Touched by Blood Cancer
Every year, different celebrities hold an honorary chair for Light the Night. Each honorary chair holder has either had a blood cancer themselves, or has an immediate family member who was affected by the disease. These celebrities help to illuminate Light the Night’s mission by speaking about their cause on a national level all throughout the year. Speaking about their personal experience is extremely moving. There’s no better way to garner support than by sharing your own struggles to spread hope.
Creating Awareness Through Fundraising
This fundraising walk allows survivors, family, and friends who have been touched by the disease to come together to create awareness and raise money for a great cause. Many companies even get involved by having employees volunteer during walks or raise money to do a group walk together. If you raise $100, you become a Champion for Cures and are honored with an illuminated balloon, a t-shirt, and a wristband for food and refreshments at the walk. It’s a great way for people to create a camaraderie with others who have been through the same experience so they don’t feel alone. It also allows participants to raise money in memory of their loved ones who have passed away and to share their inspirational story.
