Leukemia, Lymphoma And Myeloma Awareness Month
Leukemia, Lymphoma and Myeloma are cancers of the blood or bone marrow, covering a spectrum of diseases that affect white blood cells and lymphocytes of the immune system. Sixty years ago, there were few effective treatments for people with blood cancer and the rate of survival was very low. However, more than 85 percent of children with acute leukemia and more than 86 percent of patients with Hodgkin lymphoma are now cured due to improved therapies and stem cell transplantation. Even patients with diseases resistant to treatment, such as myeloma, are benefiting from new drugs that increase the rate and duration of remissions. Despite the recent success in our fight against blood cancers, more than three quarters of a million people in the United States have some form of blood cancer, and an estimated 52,310 will die from one this year.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society offers assistance and guidance to those affected by blood cancer, and every September, the Society observes Leukemia, Lymphoma & Myeloma Awareness Month, to improve the public’s awareness of these diseases and inform them of the resources available to patients and families affected by these diseases.
