Pit bulls often get a bad rap, but the founders and volunteers at Handsome Dan’s Rescue are on a mission to change that. The Rhode Island-based nonprofit works with pit bulls and pit bull-type dogs, and strives to raise awareness on the importance of equal treatment for all canines – regardless of breed.
The organization focuses its efforts on pit bull-type dogs in shelters who are less likely to be adopted for behavioral or medical reasons. It provides foster care and vet care, along with a Shelter Dog Enrichment Program that helps dogs experiencing kennel stress. The rescue also provides several free spay/neuter surgeries for adopted at-risk dogs throughout the year.
Kim Fiore, Director of Operations for Handsome Dan’s Rescue, is excited to be an ePromos for Good winner because it means she’ll have the funds to make the organization more visible in the community.
“We often have a table at community events and fundraisers for local shelters,” she says, “but right now, people walk right by and don’t realize what we are or why we are there. They can’t see our logo until they are right up on the table.”
That’s why Fiore plans to use the $500 ePromos for Good win to purchase custom tablecloths and banners.
“We would be able to attract more attention at the events, which would allow us to talk to and possibly help more community members,” she says.
The nonprofit uses a variety of other promotional items to spread awareness: car magnets, t-shirts, and hats. It also distributes brochures that explain its mission and programs.watch full Magic in the Moonlight film online
Fiore is excited to add logo tablecloths and banners to the promotional mix. “These would allow us to be seen in the crowd of booths at an event. By talking to people at these events, we can get the word out and have a greater impact on helping to control pet overpopulation.”
